Natural Sanitizing Spray

IMG_3076.jpg

Recipe:

2 drops of pure essential oils in every ounce of water

As I sat and thought about which DIY/Recipe I wanted to share with you all first I couldn't stop thinking about how much I enjoy using this one.

We haven't used a synthetic "germ killer" in almost a decade.  When I first started learning about pure essential oils, and the benefits of ridding our home of chemicals and synthetic cleaners and fragrances, I immediately noticed my migraines becoming less frequent and my asthma attacked were occurring with more time in between each.  After years of living, as green as possible, in our home, my migraines and asthma are virtually gone.  I know I still have them because when we go into certain stores or people's homes I continue to get flare ups and attacks.  When I am home, though, I feel great!

We use this recipe for SO MUCH in our family! We have replaced our "smell good" room sprays, disinfectant cleaners, and even hand sanitizer with this one simply recipe.

My family has learned to recognize these spray bottles, in our home, and they all love them!  My children have been around natural remedies all of their lives.  I have been intentional about teaching them which things are safe and okay for them to use (age/maturity based for each person) and which ones they have to get Mommy or Daddy to help them with.

This recipe is on the safe list for our whole family.  They know it is okay to spray it in the air or on their beds to help their rooms smell nice and may even help clean the air and surfaces.  They know NOT to spray inside their ears or eyes because we have talked about how it will burn to get things in our eyes and getting water stuck in your ear is no fun!

My kids have been known to spray some in their mouths when they have a sore throat or they want to freak someone out.  Seriously, my boys have a sense of humor, watch out!

You will also see every person who enters our home spraying some on their hands, upon arrival, as a safety precaution for our son, Cohen.  Our home is his safe space and while we love fellowshipping with others, we have to make sure our home is his safe haven for his health.  We are not willing to jeopardize this and our friends and family gladly spray their hands in love and agreement.

How can something so simple have such a wide variety of uses and benefits?

The essential oil blend we use for our spray is doTERRA OnGuard.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a doctor (and the only medical training I have received is what I had to get when my son was post heart transplant and we had to pass a check list to make sure he was safe to come home with us from the hospital).  I am not trying to say OnGuard will cure, prevent, or treat any disease or ailment.  Always consult with your Doctor about what is right for you.

With that being said, I am a Mom who has a medically fragile child and in our years of experience, this is the only recipe we have used in our home to keep us safe and protected from "seasonal threats."  Keep in mind, also, I am a super freak about germs and we take hygiene and good nutrition very seriously in our family. We wash our hands with soap and water, properly, often.  I am very diligent about keeping food surfaces (and all surfaces for that matter) clean for my son's health and welfare.

All I want to do, today, is share with you what MY FAMILY has done with this recipe and you can research and try whatever you choose.

OnGuard is an essential oil blend of wild orange peel, clove bud, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus leaf, and rosemary leaf.

When you research each individual essential oil (and smell the combination, wow!)  you will quickly see why I chose to use it and why it is so versatile.  doTERRA's essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) and I feel safe and blessed to have them in my home for my family's use.

When choosing essential oils for use, especially with sanitizing purposes, in mind, look for oils that are beneficial for what you are trying to fight off.  A simple google search or referencing a book like Modern Essentials or The Essential Life can help you find out the benefits for each oil in question.

When I started using this spray it was for the purpose of replacing Lysol.  After research and use, overtime, I realized that it was also great to take with us in smaller bottles for keeping our hands and surfaces "on the go" clean.

Within the natural remedy world, and when using essential oils, I have to be mindful and watch out with what all I say in order to stay compliant.  I wish I could tell you all of the benefits we have seen in our family since we started using OnGuard and other doTERRA essential oils and natural remedies with herbs and homemade items over the years.  It was been a wonderful journey!

I am so blessed with this recipe and it couldn't get any easier!

Here are some examples for how I use different sized spray bottles:

-2 ounce spray bottle (typically found in the travel section at your local store)

Carefully and slowly put 4 drops of OnGuard in the bottle and top it off with water.  Shake well before each use to "activate" (is what my kids say).  Remember, oil and water separate and don't mix.  You want to make sure you are getting the right amount of essential oil every time you spray.

-8 ounce spray bottle (usually found in beauty or cleaning supply aisle or found online)

14-16 drops of OnGuard in the bottle.  Top it off with water. Remember to "activate" before each use!

-16-24 ounce spray bottles are either sold (as glass) online or in your garden/cleaning section at your local store.

Again, double the drops of essential oil per ounces of water.  I would use 30-40 drops of OnGuard in a larger spray bottle like this.

$$$MONEY SAVING TIP:  When using a larger spray bottle, I mix 3/4 OnGuard and 1/4 Lemon essential oils.  In my 24 ounce spray bottles I will add 20-25 drops of OnGuard and 5-10 drops of Lemon essential oil.  Then top it off with water and "activate" before each use.

Lemon essential oil is wonderful at fighting off "bad guys"and smells incredible with OnGuard!  Lemon is cheaper to make and therefore more cost effective, too!  So this little trick will help stretch out your essential oil supply without compromising all of those benefits and versatility that we spoke about before (remember to do your homework and look up how incredible these pure essential oils are).

I love learning and sharing about essential oils!  It is truly one of my favorites passions. I wish we lived in a world that I could share more openly and honestly.  Nonetheless, we live in a world that I can share this recipe and you are able to try it out and see how you like it!  The essential oil and herbal remedy world is a blessing and you can learn something new everyday and still never know everything!

Let me know how you like this DIY Recipe and share it with your friends.  This is a cheap and great gift idea for loved ones, too!
